Quick Facts
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a normal stress response. It becomes a disorder when worry is excessive, hard to control, and lasts most days for six months or more, getting in the way of work, relationships, or daily life.
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is the most common form. Panic disorder, social anxiety, and specific phobias fall under this umbrella too.
About 1 in 20 adults experience an anxiety disorder in any given year. Many more will at some point in their lives. It's a real, diagnosable condition, not a personal failing.
Symptoms of Anxiety
Anxiety shows up mentally and physically:
Persistent worry that's hard to turn off
Restlessness or feeling on edge
Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank
Irritability
Muscle tension
Trouble falling or staying asleep, or waking unrested
Racing heart, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, unexplained aches
Fatigue
Many of these symptoms are physical. That's why anxiety is sometimes mistaken for a body-only health issue, and why a thorough workup matters.
What Contributes to Anxiey?
Anxiety disorders usually come from several factors at once:
Brain chemistry and stress response: Differences in how your brain and nervous system process stress.
Genetics: Anxiety and other mental health conditions run in families.
Life experiences: Chronic stress, major life changes, or trauma history can raise risk.
Physical health: Thyroid imbalance, blood sugar swings, nutrient deficiencies, chronic pain, and stimulants (including too much caffeine) can cause or worsen anxiety symptoms.
Risk factors include family history, trauma history, being female (anxiety disorders are diagnosed more often in women), and having another mental health condition like depression.
How Anxiety Is Diagnosed
Anxiety is diagnosed based on detailed history and clinical criteria: persistent, excessive worry most days for six months or more, plus related physical or cognitive symptoms.
Screening tools like the GAD-7 questionnaire are often used alongside a clinical interview. Bloodwork and a physical exam help rule out conditions (like thyroid dysfunction) that mimic anxiety.
If your symptoms sound like anxiety but you haven't been formally assessed, we're happy to help you figure out where to begin.

How Healthflow Supports Your Anxiety Care
Therapy and sometimes medication are front-line treatments for anxiety. Through a functional medicine lens, we look at the whole body, including the physical side that often goes unchecked:
Functional testing. Thyroid function, blood sugar regulation, nutrient status (B12, iron, magnesium). Imbalances here can cause or intensify anxiety symptoms.
Stress physiology support. We look at how chronic stress affects your body: sleep, energy, daily functioning. Our team has a clinical focus on adrenal and stress-related concerns, including anxiety, insomnia, and chronic fatigue.
Lifestyle foundations. Sleep, movement, caffeine intake, and nervous-system-focused strategies that support (not replace) therapy and medical treatment.
Careful coordination. If you take psychiatric medication, we screen for interactions before recommending any supplement. Some (like St. John's Wort) interact seriously with SSRIs and other medications.
Care is available in-person at our Calgary clinic or virtually across Alberta. Direct billing is available for many extended health plans.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everyone feels stress and occasional worry. An anxiety disorder is diagnosed when worry becomes excessive, hard to control, and persistent (most days for six months or more) and interferes with daily life, often alongside physical symptoms like muscle tension or poor sleep.
Yes. We treat anxiety directly by identifying and addressing physical contributors like thyroid function, nutrient status, blood sugar, and sleep, alongside stress and nervous system support tailored to you. Many people get the best results by combining this with therapy or medication, and if you're not yet connected with a therapist or physician, we're glad to help you find that support.
Yes. We take this seriously. Certain supplements, including St. John's Wort and 5-HTP, can interact with SSRIs, SNRIs, and other psychiatric medications. Always tell your naturopathic doctor and prescriber about everything you're taking before starting anything new.
Yes. Naturopathic doctors can diagnose anxiety disorders using standardized clinical criteria and a detailed history. When a case would benefit from psychiatric or medical input, such as medication management, we'll help connect you with that support as part of your overall care.
Thyroid imbalance, blood sugar swings, and nutrient deficiencies (B12, iron, magnesium) can all cause or worsen anxiety symptoms. Functional testing shows whether any of these are part of your picture, so treatment goes beyond symptoms alone.
Often, yes. Many people still deal with physical symptoms, fatigue, or sleep issues even with good mental health care in place. We can work alongside your existing care team to address those gaps.
